Food habits

In India, pregnancy diets are often guided by family advice, traditions, and long-held beliefs. Pregnancy often comes with one strong belief - eat more. More rotis, more ghee, more sweets, and bigger portions because “you are eating for two.”

But according to celebrity nutritionist Ryan Fernando, who guided Anushka Sharma during her pregnancy, this thinking is one of the biggest mistakes many Indian women make.

Anushka’s pregnancy diet was not about eating more food. It was about eating the right food, in the right amount, at the right time.

The Common Pregnancy Diet Problem in India

In many Indian households, pregnancy food advice is driven by tradition and emotion. Pregnant women are often told to

Doctor Q&As from Parents like you

  • Eat large meals even when not hungry
  • Increase ghee, sweets, and fried foods
  • Focus mainly on carbs like rice and roti
  • Rest too much and move very little

Ryan Fernando explains that while these habits come from care, they often lead to imbalanced nutrition.

The most common mistake?
Too many calories, but not enough nutrients.

How Anushka Sharma’s Pregnancy Diet Was Different

Anushka Sharma did not follow the “eat for two” rule. Her nutritionist focused on balanced meals, not heavy meals.

Her diet included:

  • Simple, home-cooked food
  • Enough protein spread across the day
  • Seasonal fruits and vegetables
  • Healthy fats in small amounts
  • Clean, easy-to-digest meals

What Anushka Actually Ate During Pregnancy

According to Ryan Fernando, Anushka’s meals were built around nutrition.

Her pregnancy diet focused on:

  • Protein-rich foods like dal, curd, paneer, nuts, seeds, and plant-based protein
  • Fresh vegetables for fibre and vitamins
  • Fruits for natural energy and minerals
  • Whole grains instead of refined flour
  • Healthy fats like nuts and seeds, not excess ghee

There was no junk food overload and no extreme dieting. It was just mindful eating.

Another key part of Anushka’s pregnancy diet was portion control. She was not asked to eat even when she wasn’t hungry.

This helped prevent unnecessary weight gain and kept her energy levels steady.

Protein Was a Priority, Not an Afterthought

One major difference between Anushka’s diet and most Indian pregnancy diets was protein intake.

Ryan Fernando has pointed out that Indian pregnant women consume very low protein. Most meals are carb-heavy, which fills the stomach but does not fully nourish the body.

Less Sugar, Less Fried Food

Unlike common pregnancy advice that encourages sweets and fried snacks, Anushka’s diet kept sugar and fried food very limited.

Ryan Fernando believes excess sugar during pregnancy can increase the risk of  Gestational diabetes and excessive weight gain

So instead of mithai and fried snacks, her diet leaned towards natural foods.

Pregnancy Is Not a Time to Stop Moving

Along with food, Anushka’s lifestyle was also balanced. She did not follow complete bed rest unless needed. Gentle movement and staying active helped with digestion, mood, and overall health.

Pregnancy is not about eating for two bodies.
It is about nourishing two lives  - wisely and consciously.
