Healthy Baby Food Ideas for Your 8 12 months Child

There is a constant requirement for a change in baby foods being served to growing babies. By 8-12 months your kids would have gotten bored of the puries and the porridges. They will also start showing signs of dislikings and preferences. Always remember to give a variety of healthy baby foods and try not to repeat the same food recipes atleast in a week. Ideally children of this age group should have 3 solid feeds in a day accompanied by 3-4 milk feeds. As per the schedule of the family, these meals can be planned through the day.

And so, here our proparent Nandini Ghnana shares some good baby food ideas for your children that are both healthy, tasty and easy to make. Read this blog to learn how to make following baby food recipes : 1) Egg dosa 2) Fruit fingers 3) Upma 4) Rice semiyan and more. Get the recipes now !

Baby Breakfast Ideas/Recipes for 12 months Infant

1.Upma:
In a pan, add a little ghee, 3 small onions chopped, one small tomato, jeera powder, turmeric powder, finely chopped carrot, beans, potato, and any other vegetable of your choice. Saute it well. Add three cups of water and once the water boils well and the vegetables are cooked, add one cup toasted rava and mix well. Close the pan for a minute and turn off flames once the rava is cooked.
2. Egg Dosa:
In a bowl, take only the egg yolk and stir it well with spoon. Better to avoid egg white until your baby turns one. In a pan, pour the dosa batter, set it a little thick like set dosa, close it with lid, and after a minute pour the egg yolk over the dosa and close the lid. Sprinkle pepper powder only if your little one likes.  All this to be done on a low flame. Remove lid and check if the egg is cooked well and then serve.
3. Rice Semiya:
In a pan, add a little ghee, three small onions chopped, one small tomato, jeera powder, turmeric powder, finely chopped carrot, beans, potato, and any vegetable of your choice. Saute it well. Add two cups of water, once the water boils well and the vegetables are cooked, add one cup rice Semiya  and mix well. Close the pan for a minute and turn off the flame once the semiya is cooked.
4. Aval Upma( beaten rice):
Important: Add lime juice only if your little one is not allergic to citrus fruits.
Soak one cup beaten rice in a bowl of water until it becomes soft (max ten minutes). In a pan, add a little ghee, three small onions chopped, one small tomato, jeera, turmeric powder, lime juice, and add the soft beaten Rice and mix well. Close the pan for a minute and turn off the flame .

Snacks Recipes Ideas/Recipes for 12 months Child

1. Egg omlet:

Whisk only the yellow part of the egg. Add little pepper powder if you have already introduced it to your baby. Pour on a dosa pan. Cook on both sides. Make sure egg is completely cooked.
2. Fruit fingers:
Cut fruits into shapes of fingers. Steam them slightly in the pressure cooker ensuring they don’t become mushy. Encourage your baby to pick it up and eat on their own.
Fruits that can be boiled and given: Apple, pear
3. Veg soup:
Boil water, add small cubes of carrot, beans, beetroot, potato, coriander , pudina, jeera, pepper powder. After the veggies are cooked, either mash the vegetables or if your little one has already learnt to chew with his/her gums then mashing is not required. Flavour with a little butter and feed warm.

  • Report

@Divya: Once your baby shows signs of boredom then you need to start with new receipes. Try to give what ever you prepare for the rest of the family, but with less salt and no spice. You can add little pepper powder slowly.

  • Report

| Dec 08, 2016

@Swetha: It all depends on how much your baby needs. If you ate giving it for the first time then start by giving half boiled apple per day. Slowly increase to a full apple. Once your baby likes to chew apple, you can grate it in spoon and give without boiling. Again start with a lesser quantity.. Don't force feed

what about 7 month old baby?

  • Report

| Oct 08, 2016

@mounika : Please give very small pieces. Dip it in either soup, milk, Dal.

  • Report

| Oct 08, 2016

@Tanvi : you can give it with rice, dosa, idly

  • Report

| Oct 08, 2016

@ritika and @jothi: You can surely give the specified amount after the age of one. If you really feel it is more you can feel free to adjust the recipe accordingly. Better to use shallots if it is easily available in your city.

  • Report

@manisha :if your baby is less than a year old then you can check the below blog written by me https://www.parentune.com/parent-blog/homemade-baby-food-recipes-6-to-12-months/565

  • Report

| Oct 08, 2016

@tanvi : Slowly try to give him small pieces of fruits like water melon, banana. Try to vary the position by using a Adjustable chair.. Slowly you can try to change the poison from sleeping to sitting. Wait for his tooth to grow. He will surely learn to sit and eat. Do not worry. Just give him enough time, do not follow any strict time line.

  • Report

| Oct 08, 2016

@nibeditha: Doctors advice not to add salt or size until the age of one. Please consult with your pediatrician. I personally used organic brown sugar and jaggery called karupatii for my son. I used very little salt as he used to never eat if his food did not have salt

@ priyanka If your baby is less than a year old then you can check the below blog written by me https://www.parentune.com/parent-blog/homemade-baby-food-recipes-6-to-12-months/565 If your baby is older, 1. Ragi semiya ( anil brand) You need to just soak it in water for two min, steam it in oven/cooker. Flavor it with Jaggery or onions, grated carrot , salt. 2. Ragi biscuits for snacks. You can find the recipe online. 3. Sprouted ragi powder can be added in making chapati,Poori, porridge, payasam

@Jinal: You can try to include one of the following items in your baby's diet everyday: 1. Banana 2. Sweet potato 3. Potato 4. Cheese 5. Paneer 6. Curd 7. Dry fruits powder Don't force feed at once. Try giving variety of foods after short durations. If all this does not work you can try giving sprouted sathumaavu.

@mona: Adding Salt/sugar after the first year is completely fine. Please go ahead and add. But make sure you don't add too much. Try to avoid sugar, use Jaggery instead.

What should I give to my baby as he is very moody about his meals... Manytimes he will not eat anything...

  • Report

| Feb 16, 2016

Don't we need to add salt to the receipies? As none of these have salt as the content. Anyways I m also avoiding salt and sugar. My baby is 7 months. I started giving her.. veg soups. .dal..ragi

@sanjeev: You can try all the above recipe for your baby. Babies can chew with there gums. My son got his tooth only after good first year birthday, he ate all these. But don't expect your baby to immediately start eating everything. Slowly start by not mashing the food completely. Give home made biscuits. Encourage your baby to chew.

@prathibha: you can surely try for 10 month old. Egg white is advisable to be given after 12 months. First try coming these recipe with single vegetable, you try the then include multiple vegetables as per your choice. Make sure you don't try the next new ingredient before four days of introducing one. Wait for any reactions, if your baby is able to digest you can go ahead with the next.
