Jasprit Bumrah Bags ICC Test Cricketer Of The Year 2024 Award: Know How His Mother Changed His Life

Jasprit Bumrah, India’s star speedster has yet again proved his mettle by taking home the ICC Test Cricketer Of The Year 2024 Award. 

Bumrah’s life has not been a bed of roses. The man who bagged the Player of the Tournament award at the T20 World Cup, in 2024 was once a shy boy who was being raised by a single mother, Daljit. Senior journalist Deepal Trivedi posted about Bumrah’s emotional life story on X. Read on to know more.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Childhood Story 

Born on 29th November 1991 to a middle-class Sikh Punjabi family, Jasprit Bumrah lost his father to hepatitis when he was just 5 years old. The world turned upside down for the family as Daljit was left behind with two kids to take care of all by herself - Jasprit and his sister, Juhika. Daljit’s friend Deepal, helped her handle the kids for almost a month, but ultimately, she had to put her pain aside and focus on helping the family thrive. 

Bumrah’s Family Struggles

In the post on X, Deepal mentioned how Bumrah’s family struggled to make ends meet and how they had days when they could hardly afford a packet of milk for him. His mother stood like a rock, working 16 to 18 hours a day, to put food on the table. There were times when they starved, but all these hardships did not stop her from raising her kids with a good moral upbringing, and it is clearly reflected in Bumrah’s sportsmanship.

In a 2022 interview with GQ India, Bumrah said, “My mother was never firm in saying to me, ‘This is what you have to do’, but she did want me to have a career that would give me security. But that’s about it. She did not force anything on me, never told me I had to become a doctor or ­engineer”. 

“In fact, it would have been difficult for her to see me as a doctor or engineer because I was always playing cricket. She must have looked at me and wondered ‘What will he do?’ Yet one thing my mother was adamant about since she was a school principal, was that I learn the English language”, he added in the same interview.
