Everybody is trying to get healthy and many healthy food trends are getting popular. From brown rice to no sugar sweetener, everyone wants to choose the best for their families. One such trend is pink Himalayan salt. Influencers have made us believe it is more natural and healthier than our regular salt.

But a recent case in Bengaluru has raised serious concerns regarding the use of pink salt. A young child developed severe thyroid swelling after the family used only pink salt in their cooking for nearly two years. Doctors found out that the swelling was a result of iodine deficiency.

What Actually Happened?

The child was taken to the hospital because the parents noticed a big swelling in the front of the neck. After a few tests, doctors found out that the thyroid gland of the child had become very enlarged. Such a condition is known as goitre.

When doctors asked about the child’s diet, they got to know about the pink salt. They understood that the family had completely stopped using the regular iodised salt. Instead, they had been using the pink Himalayan salt for the last two years.

Pink salt usually does not contain enough iodine which leads to iodine deficiency in the child and hence the swelling.

What Is the Thyroid and Why Is It Important?

The thyroid is a small gland in the front of the neck. Even though it is small, it does very important work in the body.

It helps control the growth, energy levels and body temperature. It also helps with brain development in children.

Small children need iodine for proper growth. Without enough iodine, children can develop health problems.

Why Does the Body Need Iodine?

Iodine is a mineral that helps the thyroid work properly. Our body cannot make iodine on its own. So we have to get it from food.

The easiest way to get iodine is by using iodised salt. That is why many countries promote iodised salt.

Pink salt may look natural and healthy, but it contains very little iodine unless iodine is added to it. If a family uses only non-iodised salt for a long time, it can lead to iodine deficiency.

Signs of Iodine Deficiency

If you notice these symptoms, it may be a sign of iodine deficiency and is important to see a doctor.

  • Swelling in the neck
  • Feeling tired often
  • Slow growth
  • Weight gain
  • Trouble concentrating

Is Pink Salt Unsafe?

Pink salt is not harmful by itself. The issue is that it does not provide enough iodine.

It is fine to use it sometimes for taste. But it should not completely replace iodised salt, especially in homes that have growing children.

Always check the label to make sure the salt you use contains iodine.

The Important Lesson

Not all healthy products work well for everyone. Children need balanced nutrition. Iodine is very important for their growth and brain development.

Before making big changes to your family’s diet, it is always better to speak to a doctor or nutrition expert.

Sometimes, the simplest choices can protect your child’s health in a big way.
