Teething in babies

When you become a parent, you are forever treading on eggshells to ensure that your little one is healthy and happy. The official term for new teeth appearing is ‘eruption’; milk teeth are called deciduous teeth. There is no given time for this big event to happen but on average babies start to teeth around 6 months of age and the process can continue till they hit three. Looking for tried and tested methods for your baby? Giving a gentle gum massage is the first useful act that you can do to soothe your baby’s sore and irritated gums. Stay clear of teething jewellery like silicone or wood necklaces and bracelets. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that these objects pose a risk of choking. Also, they are not very hygienic. All you have to do is to soak a few clean washcloths in water, squeeze out the excess water, and keep them in the freezer for at least 30 to 60 minutes. Then, give it to your baby to chew. Not only will these soothe the gums, but your baby can also gnaw on them for as long as they like. Babies start teething from the front. You can ease your teething toddler’s irritation by letting them gum at your clean fingers. You could dip your finger in cold water to help calm their gums even further. But, if your baby starts getting a rash, fever, or diarrhoea along with teething, speak with your child’s paediatrician at the earliest.
