Skipping school to attend coaching classes has become quite common in India. Many students often miss regular school classes, thinking coaching is more important. This is seen especially with those preparing for competitive exams like NEET and JEE.

But the Rajasthan High Court has recently sent out a strong warning – ‘skipping school for coaching will no longer be tolerated’. Action is coming for absentees, and schools and coaching centres will also be held accountable.

The Problem

In recent years, a troubling trend has emerged. Some students are enrolled in what is called dummy schools. These schools officially have students on their rolls, but many of them barely attend classes. They spend most of their time at coaching centres learning for exams. Yes, coaching can help students prepare for competitive tests, but skipping school?  That can be a hindrance in the development of children.

The High Court pointed out that this practice undermines the purpose of schooling. School is not just for exams. Children learn life skills and social development.

What the Court Said

The Rajasthan High Court has asked CBSE and RBSE authorities to ensure that students in classes 9 to 12 attend school regularly. Special teams will conduct surprise inspections at both schools and coaching centres. If students are found skipping school but attending coaching classes during school hours, strict action will be taken.

This warning is not just for students. Schools that allow absenteeism and coaching centres that encourage students to skip school will also face consequences. The court wants everyone to take school attendance seriously.

What Students Should Do

  • Attend school regularly. Missing school without a valid reason can lead to serious consequences. This can also lead to being barred from exams.
  • Manage school and coaching schedules wisely. Focus on school during school hours and reserve coaching for after school.
  • Don’t Rely on Dummy Schools. Enrolling in a school only on paper to spend time at coaching centres is not good. It can lead to disciplinary action.

Responsibilities of Schools and Coaching Centers

  • Schools should maintain strict attendance records and ensure students attend classes regularly.
  • Teach them the importance of schooling. Explain that missing school can harm their learning in the long run.
  • Be ready for surprise inspections and cooperate fully with the SITs formed by the court.
  • Coaching centres should not encourage absenteeism. They must ensure their students are attending school properly.

How Parents Can Help

Parents have an important role in ensuring children follow school rules. In rare cases, children will bunk school for coaching without informing parents. However, if you want bail that out, you can randomly check your child’s school attendance sheet by staying in touch with the school authorities. Most of the schools support such activities for the well-being of children.

Plan coaching sessions outside school hours to avoid conflicts. Along with coaching, also encourage them to balance it with other activities like following their hobbies to balance the stress.

Dear children, skipping school for coaching and assuming it to be a shortcut to success is not really a good idea. Prioritize school while using coaching to supplement learning.
