Team games

29th August is celebrated as National Sports Day every year in memory of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. This day honors his incredible achievements in the field of hockey. He has made India proud on the world stage, inspiring generations to take up sports.

Today, screens have taken over playgrounds. The time that was once spent running in playgrounds is now spent scrolling through videos or playing video games. Children are getting more inclined towards sitting at one place. Hence, it is important that sports becomes a part of every child’s routine.

Sports mould the children. It plays an important role in shaping their character and personality.

Sports Teach Discipline and Consistency

Many times, we try to bring discipline in children by making them do homework on time or asking them to organize their things well. For many children, it takes a lot of time to come in that flow.

But when the same child joins a sport, discipline comes more naturally.. Waking up early for practice, following a coach’s instructions and sticking to a routine slowly become a habit. And the best part, they love it.

These habits slowly get adapted in academics as well. A child who learns discipline on the football field shows commitment in the classroom too.

Builds Team Spirit and Cooperation

One of the biggest life lessons children pick up from sports is teamwork.

This teaches humility and celebrate group success. When the child wins a goal, he will learn to thank the teammate who passed the ball. Sports teach them that success is never achieved alone and this skill helps a long way.

Teaches To Handle Wins and Losses Gracefully

Sports expose children to both victory and defeat. Winning gives them confidence and losing teaches resilience.

Develops Leadership Qualities

Children who play sports often get the chance to lead. For example, in cricket as a team captain. This leadership in sports teaches children about responsibility and empathy.

Such experiences prepare children for leadership roles later in life.

Sports Build Confidence and Self-Esteem

Nothing boosts a child’s morale more than achieving a milestone in sports. Hitting a six in cricket or simply completing a race that they once thought was impossible can boost their confidence to another level.

Encourages Healthy Competition

Healthy competition is essential for growth and it is not confined just to sports. In life, they will face competition. Sports provide them a safe environment where children can compete without fear of judgment. They need to learn at an early age that competition is not about proving someone else wrong. It is always about pushing themselves to be better.

Physical Fitness = Mental Wellbeing

Physical activity releases endorphins which are the happy hormones. These hormones improve mood and reduce stress.

Sports Teach Time Management

When children juggle between school and sports, they learn to manage their time wisely. They understand that managing all requires planning.

Respect for Rules and Authority

Every sport comes with rules and no child can skip them. Respecting rules and authority becomes part of their character. Whether it is waiting for their turn or following the umpire’s decision, children quickly learn to follow.

Sports Bring Social Skills and Friendships

For many children, the playground is the first place where they form real bonds outside the family. Friendships made on playgrounds often last long.

Children who play sports become more social as they get to interact with different groups of people.

Builds Emotional Strength

Sports put children in high-pressure situations. It teaches them to stay calm and focused even in stressful situations.

This maturity helps them handle exams and job interviews.

Sports Keep Children Away From Negative Influences

Children who are busy with sports don’t get time for distractions like excessive screen time or negative surroundings. Since their energy is channelised into practice and matches, they naturally stay away from such habits.

Role Models and Inspiration

Through sports, children are introduced to role models. We have our Dhyan Chand, P.V. Sindhu, Virat Kohli, Mary Kom and many other. These icons inspire children to dream big and chase goals with determination.

Let’s Encourage the Next Generation

On this National Sports Day, the best gift we can give our children is the chance to grow through sports. Which game they choose, let’s cheer them on. Because every small game is shaping who they will become tomorrow.
