A newborn baby was found alive in the early morning after being left alone outside a washroom in a railway workers’ colony in Nabadwip, Nadia district, West Bengal. The baby, only a few hours old, was wrapped in a thin cloth and left on the side of the street with no protection from the icy wind.
Anyone who hears this story can feel how frightening and painful that moment must have been for the little one.
What Happened
Late at night or very early morning, someone left a newborn outside a public washroom in the colony. The baby was alone on the ground and had no warm clothes or cover.
A group of stray dogs noticed the baby and stayed close all night. Locals say the dogs formed a circle and refused to let people or other animals come near, which likely protected the infant from harm.
At dawn, a local woman heard the baby crying and went to check. She found the newborn and called other residents. The child was then taken for medical check-up and care.

Stray Dogs Become Unexpected Guardians
Just when it seemed like the baby had no chance of surviving the cold night, something unbelievable happened - a group of stray dogs gathered around the newborn.
Instead of harming the baby, the dogs formed a protective circle and stayed close to the child. Their body warmth helped keep the newborn from freezing.
One of the dogs even started barking loudly, as if trying to call for help. Their instinct and timing became the reason the baby survived those first dangerous minutes.
A Local Woman Hears the Dogs and Follows the Sound
A woman named Sukla Mandal heard the dogs barking non-stop. At first, she thought it was a normal street fight between dogs. But the sound was different. She walked outside to check.
What she saw shocked her. In the middle of the street, surrounded by dogs, was a tiny newborn baby. The dogs were guarding the infant like protectors.
The woman immediately picked up the baby, wrapped it warmly, and rushed home. She then informed the police and called for medical help.
Soon after, police arrived at the spot and began an investigation to identify who abandoned the child. The newborn was taken to Maheshganj Hospital, and from there, to Krishnanagar Sadar Hospital.
Thankfully, the baby survived the cold because the dogs had kept it warm.
Doctors said the child would have died from the freezing temperature if the dogs hadn’t protected it at the right time.
Why Do Such Incidents Keep Happening?
Sadly, cases of abandoned newborns are still seen in many parts of India. The reasons are mainly unwanted pregnancies, financial stress, social pressure, and gender bias
But none of these reasons justify leaving a newborn helpless in the cold.
There are safe homes, adoption centres, hospitals, and NGOs that can take care of unwanted children. No baby deserves to be left alone on the street.
Stray dogs, who usually struggle for food and shelter, became heroes that night.
Police are still investigating the case to find the parents.
Meanwhile, the baby remains under hospital care and will later be handed over to child welfare authorities.
