Food habits

A 17-year-old Class 11 student from Amroha, named Ahana, recently lost her life after a sudden and severe health crisis that doctors and her family believe it was linked to her long-term eating habits.

The tragic outcome has sparked debate on the eating habits of teens. Doctors are warning parents to rethink junk food habits.

A Regular Teen, A Regular Diet

Ahana was like many teenagers today, a student balancing school, friends, and the usual teenage routines. But over the years, she developed a strong preference for fast food and packaged snacks over home-cooked meals. Her family said she often chose foods like pizza, burgers, chowmein, maggi and chips, sometimes even eating them secretly.

While these foods are popular with many teens, experts believe that constant, frequent consumption of low-nutrition, high-fat and high-spice foods can affect growing bodies more than we realise.

What Happened to Her Health

In late November 2025, Ahana began complaining of severe stomach pain. Her family first took her to a local hospital, but when her condition didn’t improve, doctors referred her to a bigger facility. Tests showed severe internal damage, including fluid buildup in her abdomen.

Even after surgery and advanced care at AIIMS Delhi, her condition deteriorated and she passed away due to complications during treatment.

Was It Really the Food? What Doctors Are Saying

Doctors said Ahana’s digestive system had suffered extensive damage over time and that her long-term fast food habits likely made her body vulnerable to serious complications.

However, it’s important to note that not all medical experts agree that junk food alone caused her demise. Some outlets report that she was also dealing with other serious health issues, such as infections, which contributed to her collapse.

What experts say about intake of junk food?

  • Fast food itself does not directly cause death, but it can weaken overall health when eaten excessively over the years.
  • Poor dietary patterns can make the body more susceptible to illness and slow recovery.
  • Balanced nutrition is especially important during teenage growth phases.

So while her unhealthy diet may not be the sole cause, this incident has highlighted how critical good eating habits are for teens.

This story has become a wake-up call, urging families to think deeply about what children actually eat and not just what they like to eat.

Takeaways for Parents, Teachers and Teens

Balanced Nutrition Matters - Teen bodies are still growing, and they need proteins, vitamins, fibre and micronutrients regularly.
Fast Food in Moderation - Treats are OK now and then, but frequent consumption of high-fat, low-nutrient foods can weaken immunity and digestive health.
Professional Advice — If a teenager is showing repeated complaints like stomach pain, fatigue, and mood changes, it’s worth consulting a doctor early.

At a time when fast food and packaged snacks are easier than ever to get, parents and schools must work together to promote mindful eating, balanced nutrition, and real conversations about health.
