DGHS Raises Red Flag on Cough Syrup Usage in Young Children

Recently, 11 children in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra lost their lives due to acute kidney failure. A similar case was reported a few days ago in Rajasthan. Investigations revealed that these tragic incidents were linked to the use of cough syrups given to them for common colds and coughs.
In response, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has taken urgent action. The DGHS has now issued an advisory warning parents and doctors against using cough syrups in children under two years of age.

Doctor Q&As from Parents like you
The children were given over the counter cough syrups to relieve cold symptoms. Instead of helping, the medicines caused severe kidney damage. Doctors found that the syrups contained ingredients that young children’s bodies couldn’t handle.
The state health authorities immediately sent the samples for testing. After the link between the syrups and the deaths became clear, the DGHS issued an urgent advisory to prevent any more such cases.

What the DGHS Advises
The DGHS has now made it very clear. Avoid giving cough syrups to children under 2 years old unless prescribed by a doctor.
Most coughs and colds in children are viral and they usually get better on their own.
Over the counter cough syrups often contain a mix of strong ingredients like antihistamines and decongestants, which can harm the liver and kidneys in young children.
These medicines can cause side effects like drowsiness, vomiting or even breathing problems in some cases.
The DGHS has urged parents to consult a pediatrician first before giving any cough or cold syrup to children.
Why Cough Syrups Can Be Dangerous for Kids
Children’s bodies are very different from adults.
Their organs are not made for such high dosages. Their liver and kidneys are still developing. Medicines that are safe for adults can be too strong for them. Even a small overdose or repeated use can harm their internal organs.
Health experts also say that most children don’t even need cough syrups.
Coughing is the body’s natural way of clearing mucus and germs from the lungs. Suppressing it can make recovery slower.
Home Remedies For Cough
- Give warm fluids like water or soup. It helps soothe the throat and thin out mucus.
- A warm steam bath or humidifier can ease congestion naturally.
- A teaspoon of honey (only for children above 1 year) can calm the throat and reduce coughing.
Our children depend on us to keep them safe. Sometimes, saying NO to medicines is the best way to protect them.
