Festivals

Mumbai loves festivals. Streets come alive with music and processions, especially during Ganesh Visarjan. But behind the joy, there are families who struggle when the celebrations get too loud. One such family recently made headlines after their baby who was born with a heart condition, was put at risk because of high-decibel music near their home.

The Night That Sparked a Complaint

For over an hour, loud music blasted outside the family’s residence as part of Ganesh Visarjan celebrations. For most people, it was part of the festive spirit. But inside one home, it was something disturbing their little one.

A four-month-old baby who was born with a hole in the heart started showing signs of distress. The parents could not stand it when they found their infant in trouble.

When the father could not bear it anymore, he went to the police and filed a complaint.

Why Did The Noise Disturb The Baby?

Doctors say that for infants with heart or respiratory issues, stress from loud noise can be dangerous. The loud music can cause their little bodies to go into overdrive.

Festivals vs. Noise: The Ongoing Debate

On one side, there’s cultural pride and religious devotion. Whereas the other side has sleepless nights for infants, seniors, and patients.

Most of us celebrate without meaning to cause harm. But in packed cities, where apartments are close to processions, the noise enters homes. And sometimes, it enters hospital wards and nurseries too.

The father’s FIR has brought this clash into focus once again.

How do we protect tradition without harming people’s health?

Loud Noise Can Cause Severe Harm

It’s not just about irritation. Science shows that constant exposure to loud noise can cause some hidden diseases.

  1. Stress and anxiety
  2. Disturbed sleep
  3. High blood pressure and heart strain
  4. Long-term hearing damage

For babies, the impact is even more serious. Their tiny hearts and nervous systems are still developing. The loud decibel sound is unsafe for them.

The Law On Noise Pollution

India actually has rules around noise pollution. The Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000 set limits for music levels in residential areas. There are also restrictions on using loudspeakers at night.

But during festivals, these rules are often stretched or simply ignored.

Festivals should bring joy to every home. Smaller speakers, shorter processions, and restricted hours help keep the spirit alive without the health risks.
