Long ago, Sage Vyasa wanted to write down the great epic of India, which we know as the Mahabharata. But it was such a long and detailed story that he needed someone wise and patient to write it without stopping.

Who could do it?
Only Lord Ganesha, because he had that sharp mind and endless wisdom.

Vyasa requested Bappa to be his scribe. Bappa agreed, but with one condition:

“Vyasa, once I start writing, you cannot pause. If you stop, I will put down my pen.”

Vyasa smiled and gave his own clever condition: “Bappa, before you write anything, you must understand it fully.”

And they began the writing of the Mahabharata.

The Ekdanta Gets Tired

The story went on and on. Bappa kept writing day and night about the wars and wisdom of Lord Krishna. All it was without any break. His hand started painting, he body was tired , but he didn’t stop.

He pressed so hard on the palm-leaf manuscripts that his pen finally broke!
But Bappa was determined. He broke off one of his tusks and used it as a pen, so the writing would never stop. That’s why Ganesha is called Ekadanta, the one with a single tusk.

After days of writing without rest, Bappa was exhausted. His body wanted rest.

Because he wrote without pause, his body grew hot. To cool him down, a soothing clay paste was applied to his body. After 10 days of writing, the paste had dried and hardened. This clay was then immersed in water to cool him down.

The Meaning of Visarjan (Immersion)

That is why, when we bring Ganpati home during Ganesh Chaturthi, we worship him with love for 10 days. We give him sweets, songs, and prayers just like we would care for a beloved guest.

But on the 10th day, we immerse him in water.
Why?
Because just as Bappa needed rest after writing the Mahabharata, we lovingly send him back to his home on Mount Kailash, to his parents Shiva and Parvati, so that he can rest and come back to us fresh and smiling next year.
