What was supposed to be a fun afternoon ended in tragedy for a toddler in China. A three-year-old boy in Zhejiang province collapsed and died after choking on the tapioca pearls in a bubble milk tea while playing on a trampoline.

What Happened

The little boy had just been drinking bubble milk tea with large tapioca pearls, also called boba. After drinking, he got on a trampoline and started jumping. Suddenly, he collapsed. His parents tried to help him, but the sticky pearls blocked his airway, and he could not breathe. Emergency help arrived, but unfortunately, it was too late.

The father later shared a video from the mall showing what happened. The bubble tea shop had a warning that children should drink the tea under adult supervision. But in this case, supervision was not enough to prevent the accident.

Why It Happened

The toddler was drinking while jumping on a trampoline. Swallowing while moving increases the risk of choking.

The excitement of play and jumping may have caused him to swallow too quickly or incorrectly.

The tapioca pearls are usually large and sticky. In this case, it got difficult for the team to remove it.

What To Do In a Choking Emergency

Signs of choking include difficulty breathing, not making any sound, or blue lips. Quick action with first aid like back blows or the Heimlich maneuver can save lives.

But some items like sticky tapioca pearls may be very hard to remove. So it is always better to avoid any activity while eating.

What Is Heimlich Maneuver

The Heimlich maneuver is a first-aid method to help someone who is choking. It works by giving quick, firm pushes on the belly just above the stomach. This creates pressure that can push out the object blocking the throat, so the person can breathe again.

For babies and toddlers, a gentler version is used with light back slaps and chest pushes. Knowing the Heimlich maneuver can save a life in an emergency.

How to Keep Young Children Safe

  • Make children sit down when eating or drinking.
  • Avoid foods and drinks with large chewy or sticky pieces.
  • Wait until after playtime to give snacks or drinks.
  • Always watch toddlers closely during snack time.
  • Learn basic choking first aid to respond quickly in emergencies.
  • If at a trampoline park or mall, choose safer food options for little kids.

By taking these small precautions, we can make playtime safe and prevent avoidable accidents.
