Social & Emotional

During an interaction on Sadhguru’s YouTube channel, Alia Bhatt spoke about balance. She shared that she makes sure to sleep 8 to 9 hours every night. She softly said,
“All we are told is sleep, rest… It’s when your body repairs itself.”

Sadhguru listened and replied with a smile, “That’s a fourth of your day. When will you live?”

He said it on a lighter note, but it had a deeper message. As they were conversing, the topic shifted to parenting. Alia opened up about her daughter Raha, who is three-and-a-half years old.

Alia said, “She is the joy of my life. But I am worried all the time.

She mentioned how becoming a mother brings both happiness and concern. She asked, “I keep wondering… am I a good mother? Am I saying the right things?”

It is the question many parents feel – the guilt, the pressure to be perfect.

The Pressure

Today, parenting comes with pressure. Social media shows perfect parenting. And the pressure to reach that level makes life more complicated. We forget to enjoy the small happiness in the zest of getting everything perfect.

In the middle of all this, Alia asked a simple question to Sadhguru, “What is the one piece of advice you would give to a parent who is constantly worried?”

Sadhguru gave a response that no one expected. He said, “A worried parent is not a good parent.”

He didn’t mean to blame parents but to make people think. He explained that constant worry will not help a child grow. Instead, it creates more stress in the journey of parenting and the child can feel that too.

A Different Way to Look at Parenting

Alia responded honestly, saying, “I don’t think you can take worry out of it.”

But Sadhguru had a different perspective to offer.

He said, “When you have a child, the first thing is to drop the idea that you have to teach them something.”

He then asked her a simple question:

“Between you and your daughter, who is more joyful?”

“Her,” Alia replied.

“Then who should be the consultant for life?” he asked.

Alia smiled and said, “She.”

With that, he made his point:

“What is there for you to teach?” Let them be.

Sadhguru explained that children are naturally closer to life. They are more joyful and less burdened by worry.

Instead of constantly trying to shape them, parents should observe and allow them to grow.

“You must let them. You must watch, he said.

A Reality Check for Modern Parents

Today, parenting feels like a task to manage. In the middle of planned schedules and controlling everything, parents forget that children know how to live in the moment.

You don’t have to be a perfect parent.

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is worry a little less…and be present a little more.
