Exams bring pressure, and there is no denying that. As board exams approach, students across the country begin stretching their study hours, cutting down on sleep, and pushing themselves harder than ever. Late-night revisions, early alarms, constant worry about marks – all this becomes a cycle of stress.

In the middle of this exam season, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a very simple yet powerful piece of advice during Pariksha Pe Charcha 2026:

“Get proper sleep.”

It may sound basic, but it carries deep meaning - especially for students who believe that sleeping less means studying more.

Why Sleep Is Not a Waste of Time

Many students feel guilty when they sleep during exams. They think those extra hours could have been used to revise one more chapter or solve another sample paper.

Doctor Q&As from Parents like you

But what most students don’t realize is that sleep is when the brain actually strengthens what you have studied.

When you sleep, your brain processes information, stores memories, and clears mental fatigue. Without enough rest, even well-prepared students may struggle to focus, recall answers, or stay calm during the exam.

PM Modi emphasized that sleep is essential for a healthy and sharp mind. A tired brain may sit in the exam hall, but it cannot perform at its best.

The Problem With Late-Night Studying

It’s common to see students studying till 2 or 3 AM before an exam. Some even skip sleep entirely the night before a big paper.

While this may feel productive at the moment, it often leads to difficulty remembering simple answers and a slower writing speed. It also adds to the anxiousness which leads to silly mistakes in the exam.

Students sometimes walk out of the exam hall saying, “I knew the answer, but I just couldn’t remember it.” In many cases, lack of sleep is the hidden reason.

Rest helps the brain stay alert and confident. Cramming at the last minute, especially at the cost of sleep, usually creates more panic than progress.

A Balanced Routine Matters

During his interaction with students, PM Modi encouraged maintaining a healthy daily routine during exams. Preparation is important, but so is physical and mental well-being.

A balanced routine includes studying consistently during the day, limiting unnecessary screen time at night, eating properly, and sleeping for around seven hours. These simple habits can reduce stress and improve focus more than extra hours of tired studying ever could.

Exams are not just a test of knowledge; they are also a test of how well you manage your mind.

A Message for Parents

Parents also have a major role to play during exam season. Often, out of concern, they unintentionally increase pressure by constantly asking about preparation or comparing their child’s performance with others.

Instead, encouragement works better than pressure. A calm home environment, supportive words, and ensuring that the child sleeps well can make a huge difference.

A confident child performs better than a stressed one.

Sleep Improves Confidence

Good sleep does more than improve memory. It improves mood. It reduces anxiety. It helps students think clearly and stay composed in the exam hall.

When students are well-rested, they feel more in control. They read questions carefully. They manage time better. They make fewer careless mistakes.

Success in exams is not just about how many hours you sit with your books. It is about how effectively your mind works during those hours and on the final exam day.

So as exams continue, remember….

A tired brain struggles while a rested brain succeeds.

Study well. Stay calm. And most importantly - get proper sleep.
