The ongoing Class 12 board examinations in Maharashtra took an unexpected turn this week as authorities cracked down on exam malpractice. But this time, it wasn’t just students who faced action.

Surprisingly, teachers who were assigned to supervise the exam halls were also held responsible.

Surprise Inspection Reveals Cheating

The incident happened during the Class 12 English board exam in Ambad tehsil of Jalna district. A special monitoring team, known as a flying squad, carried out a sudden inspection at several exam centres. Flying squads are appointed by education authorities to ensure that exams are conducted fairly and without malpractice.

During their inspection, they found several students copying answers inside the examination halls. The squad checked multiple centres, including Rohilagad, Ankushnagar, and Shahgad, and confirmed that unfair practices were taking place.

This inspection was part of regular monitoring because nearly 15 lakh students across Maharashtra are appearing for the board exams this year. Authorities were already on alert to prevent cheating and ensure discipline.

However, what they found raised serious concerns.

Action Against Teachers for Negligence

Usually, when students are caught cheating, strict action is taken against them. But this time, the authorities went a step further. Six teachers who were working as invigilators (exam supervisors) at these centres were charged with negligence. They were accused of failing to properly monitor the exam halls and prevent cheating.

The Education Officer (Secondary) instructed the schools to suspend these teachers for not performing their duties responsibly.

It is rare for teachers to face such direct disciplinary action during board exams. This passes an important message from the authorities that supervision is a serious responsibility, and any lapse will not be ignored.

More Cases Found in Other Districts

The Jalna case was not an isolated incident.

On the very first day of the Maharashtra State Board’s Class 12 English exam, another major case of mass copying was reported in Kannad taluka of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.

After reviewing CCTV footage, officials found students openly copying from one another. Following this, the police registered an FIR against 23 individuals, including invigilators and exam staff.

The authorities immediately replaced the entire exam centre staff. Suspension procedures were started against those involved.

These cases were registered under the Maharashtra Prevention of Malpractices at University, Board and Other Specified Examinations Act, 1982, a law designed to maintain fairness in examinations.

Board Exams – A Vital Turning Point

Board exams such as the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) are pivotal in shaping students’ academic futures and college admissions. Incidents of cheating not only undermine the credibility of the exam process but also raise serious questions about supervision and accountability at testing centres.

Officials have put strict rules in place, which include:

·       All exam centres are monitored by flying squads.

·       CCTV cameras are installed in many centres.

·       Any violation can lead to suspension, cancellation of papers, or even police cases.

·       Teachers and invigilators are equally responsible for maintaining discipline.

As the board exams continue throughout the month, authorities are expected to remain extra alert. With media attention growing and disciplinary action already taken, stricter monitoring is likely in the coming days.
