Home remedies for cough and cold

With young children, sometimes it seems like one bout of illness hasn’t even vanished yet before the next one rears its ugly head. Diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, cold, and cough – these are some of the most common concerns the little ones have to deal with, and in turn, the parents. A cough or a fever can be an indicator of any one of various viral and bacterial infections, including the common cold.

While you will need to consult your child’s pediatrician in case of a high fever or difficulty in breathing, read on to find out how you can ease the symptoms at home.

Cold, Cough And Fever In Toddlers

It’s extremely difficult to see your little one sneezing constantly, or irritated by a runny nose, or a cough that just doesn’t seem to stop. But before you work yourself into a panic, let’s try and understand a little about the common cold.

What Food Can I Give To My Toddler During Cold And Cough?

When your toddler is unwell and is refusing to eat solid food, give him plenty of warm fluids.

  1. You may give him bone broth (if you are a non-vegetarian)
  2. For vegetarians, clear vegetable soups will do the trick
  3. Hot rasam (a South Indian dish of watery consistency taken with rice) made with garlic, jeera and turmeric will work wonders for a cold
  4. Warm water with one teaspoon of honey mixed with ginger juice - as it helps soothe a sore throat

Symptoms Of Cough And Cold In Your Child

  1. Runny Nose
  2. Sneezing
  3. Vomiting Tendency
  4. Eventually loss of appetite
  5. Heavy voice
  6. Chest congestion (cough accumulation)
  7. Feeling drowsy all the time

Home Remedies For Cough And Cold In Your Child

When your child comes down with a bout of cold, here are some simple home remedies that can help.

    Apple Juice

Yes! This good old staple in many homes helps boost immunity and protects your child from allergies.

    Preparing Apple Juice

    1. Cut an apple without peeling and put it in the pressure cooker with half glass of water
    2. Boil it for 2 minutes or till the apple turns soft
    3. Strain it properly while mashing the apple with a spoon
    4. Add 1 spoon (as per requirement) honey once the juice is lukewarm and feed it your child
Parentune Tip: It is best to give him the juice as the first food of the day, even before milk, for infants above 6 months and toddlers.

    Nutmeg (Jaiphal)

A well-known spice, used to enhance the aroma and taste of Indian foods, can also be used as a cure because of its medicinal properties.

How To Give Your Child Nutmeg

    1. Rub the nutmeg in a sandalwood stone grinder with some milk
    2. Make a smooth paste & give it to your child followed by milk
    3. It can be given twice a day with time duration of a minute of 8 hrs
    4. It can be given to new-born babies but in small quantities
    5. Dosage- ½ of a spoon for 2-year-old!

    Saffron(Kesar)

An expensive spice, known for the in-built beauty enhancer characteristics, also has medicinal properties.

How To Give Your Child Kesar?

    1. Soak 1 piece of saffron in 2 teaspoons of milk for a minimum of 2 hrs
    2. Rub it in the same milk after 2 hrs
    3. Add it to your child’s milk and make him drink it
    4. You will see the effect in 1 week if continued daily

    Turmeric Milk (Haldi-Wala Doodh)

Another healing spice with anti-bacterial properties found quite easily in all Indian homes, can also be used as a remedy to push away cold.

    How To Prepare Turmeric Milk?

    1. Boil the child’s milk with turmeric in it for a minute or two!
    2. Cool it till it turns lukewarm and give it to your child
    3. This is an extremely beneficial drink and builds immunity to the child

    Basil (Tulsi) Leaves

The only herb which is trusted and used for cure against various diseases and disorders in Ayurveda. Tulsi is an awesome cough repellent and can be used in different ways.

How You Can Use Basil Leaves For Your Child?

    1. Grind 3-4 basil leaves
    2. Boil them for 2 minutes
    3. Add some honey and feed your child the lukewarm drink
    4. You can add fresh ginger, cardamom, turmeric, betel leaves, and black pepper
    5. This works as an instant relief for your child

Is your remedies work in 6th month pregnancy too??

  • Report

| Nov 15, 2017

hey Pooja! nice remedies, even I follow these remedies for my daughter. I prepare one more concoction for my daughter for cough and chest congestion: 1-2 Doddapatre leaves ( ajwain leaves), 5-6 peppercorns, 5-6 Tulsi leaves, 1tsp ajwain and a small piece of ginger. boil all the above ingredients in 1/2 cup water too the water quantity reduces to half it's volume. Filter the preparation. give half of the concoction to your child in the morning and the other half in the night. You can also mix it with honey (as required) and then give it to your child! Truly works wonders!

as for nutmeg... please do not give a smooth paste as written by the expert here... your child will have loose motions. one just needs to rub it once or twice on the chakla with a little water and give. anything more than that is dangerous for your child.

Hi Debolina. My take on vicks is already explained in my previous comment( harmless when applied to the feet). Moreover, juice made with boiled apples is best when taken empty stomach. I do this first thing in the morning for my son & surely this has boosted his immunity. And ya! raw fruits should never be consumed empty stomach.

  • Report

| Feb 02, 2017

Vicks is not recommended for applying in the nose or chest as it can block air passage in little babies, but it can be applied on the sole(as mentioned in the blog). Also, brandy can be rubbed on the soles for keeping the child warm through out the night.

  • Report

| Feb 02, 2017

hi.. first of all vicks is not recommended and secondly apple juice is not good in empty stomach. after breakfast its a best option. other options are useful. thanks

Hi Priya. Vicks vaporub is undoubtedly unsafe to be applied in or near nostrils. In fact I would never recommend its application anywhere else except the sole of baby's foot. Its totally harmless when applied on the foot.

  • Report

| Feb 02, 2017

Except Apple juice, everything can be given to children below 6 months but in small doses. Apple juice can be given once you start semi-solids.

  • Report

| Feb 02, 2017

informative but I would like to disagree on use of Vicks vaporub .as it's not safe .we should never use it on kids below 2 years .and never near their nostrils
