Story behind it

Not every act of courage looks the same. Some acts don’t involve loud words or big actions. Sometimes, courage is quiet. Sometimes, it comes in the form of a small cup of tea.

India honoured a young 10-year-old boy, Shravan Singh with the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar for doing something very simple. He offered tea to soldiers standing guard for the country. This may look like a simple act, but it has touched many hearts and deserves that appreciation.

Who Is Shravan Singh

Shravan Singh isa Class IV student from Tara Wali village in Ferozepur district, Punjab, right near the India-Pakistan border. Shravan was living in his village when Operation Sindoor began in May 2025, a time of heightened tension along the border. Seeing Indian Army soldiers stationed close to his home, he decided to help them in his own way. Every day, despite the risks, he carried tea, milk, buttermilk (lassi), water and ice to the soldiers on duty, showing simple kindness and concern for those protecting the nation. His selfless act of service and care for the soldiers done without being asked, earned him the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, India’s highest civilian award for children, which was presented to him by President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi.

The boy did not plan to be noticed. He did not do this to be praised or rewarded. He simply saw soldiers doing their duty in tough conditions and felt he should do something.

How the Story Reached the Nation

The soldiers were deeply touched by the young boy’s consistency and sincerity. They spoke about him among themselves and shared his story with their seniors. Soon, local villagers and officials also came to know about the child who was quietly supporting the troops during a sensitive time. His actions were reported to district authorities, who verified the details and realised that this was not a one-time gesture, but a genuine act of service by a child.

From there, the story moved beyond the village. District officials forwarded Shravan’s name and story to state authorities, highlighting his courage and sense of responsibility at such a young age. After proper review, his act was recognised at the national level, and he was selected for the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar.

What the Rashtriya Bal Puraskar Stands For

The award is given to children who show bravery, compassion, leadership, or talent at a young age. By honouring this boy, India sent a clear message - kindness and empathy matter just as much as big achievements.

He Was Not the Only Young Hero

This year’s award ceremony included many powerful stories. Among them was an orphan, Vansh Tayal, who took care of a child with special needs.

Vansh Tayal’s story is deeply touching. In 2020, Vansh was only 12 years old when he lost both his parents during the COVID pandemic. He was later sent to a child care home in Chandigarh. Life there was not easy for him. He felt lonely, angry, and sad. One day, he met a much younger child who had cerebral palsy and could not even feed himself. Seeing this child struggle made Vansh think differently about his own life. He decided to help him.

With the support of his teachers and caretakers at Snehalaya, Vansh slowly took on the responsibility of caring for the child. He helped him eat, supported him during physiotherapy, and stayed with him through daily routines. Now 17, Vansh says he will continue to care for the child even after leaving the institute. He plans to get a job to support himself and dreams of studying clinical psychology so he can help more people in the future. For his kindness and care, Vansh was honoured with the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar by President Droupadi Murmu.

These stories remind us that strength does not depend on age or background. Even children can teach adults important lessons about humanity.
