In a recent public appearance at the launch of her new book Mrs Funnybones Returns, Twinkle Khanna spoke candidly about the realities of modern parenthood.

Twinkle Khanna said that parenting today is much harder than it used to be. She explained that when she was growing up, her mother only had to do a few basic things like make sure meals were ready, help with homework, oil their hair, and braid it neatly. After that, children were mostly left to their own devices. “That was enough,” she said.

In contrast, modern parents are expected to do so much more. They have to cook healthy meals, manage their children’s education, supervise screen time, plan activities, take care of emotional needs, and still make sure kids look neat and tidy. Twinkle joked that sometimes she feels like standing at the door and crying because of the constant challenges of parenting.

Today’s parents face much more pressure than earlier generations. Society expects parents to play roles of chef, teacher, coach, counsellor and be perfect in everything.

Why Parenting Feels Harder Today

Technology and screen time

Children today spend a lot of time on phones, tablets, and computers. Parents often struggle to control this without causing arguments.

High expectations

Parents are expected to provide the best education, extracurricular activities, nutrition, and emotional support. The pressure to do everything perfectly is real.

Multiple roles for parents

Unlike before, many parents today balance their careers, household chores, and raising children all at once.

Social pressure

With social media, parenting styles are constantly shared and compared, adding stress and guilt.

Changing needs of children

Modern children face different challenges in school, friendships, and online life, which require new parenting skills.

How to Overcome Parenting Challenges

Parenting today can be tough, but there are simple ways to make it easier:

Focus on what matters. Love, care, and spending time with your kids are more important than doing everything perfectly.

It’s okay to make mistakes. No parent is perfect. Don’t set unrealistic expectations.

Spend a little time on yourself to relax, recharge, or do a hobby. Take time for yourself

By saying “our mothers had it much easier,” Twinkle Khanna isn’t saying parenting was perfect in the past. She is pointing out that today’s parents face more challenges and more responsibilities than before.
