Foods to Avoid
Food habits

Nowadays, parents are becoming more careful about their children’s diet, especially in the early years. And it is necessary also because with time, lifestyle and eating habits are changing which leads to complications on a later stage in life.

One such habit is the sugar intake. Recently, in an interview with Parentune, Richa Chadha said that she has a no sugar rule for her daughter until the age of four.

This may sound strict, but it is a thoughtful decision for her little one.

Why Avoid Sugar So Early?

In the first few years, a child’s body is growing rapidly. This is the time when they need foods that provide real nutrition. They need foods that help in physical growth and brain development.

Sugar does not offer any of these benefits. It only adds sweetness without any important nutrients. When children fill up on sugary foods, they may eat less of the healthy foods.

How Sugar Affects Taste Habits

Children are usually fussy eaters. And introducing sugar at an early age is making them used to the sweet taste. The more we give sweet products, the more their taste bud demand it, and they don’t like eating food that does not taste sweet. Over time, this can make them less interested in simple foods like fruits, vegetables, and home-cooked meals.

If we avoid sugar in the beginning, we give them a chance to enjoy natural flavours. This helps them become open to different types of food as they grow.

Impact on Health and Energy

Apart from taste, sugar can also affect a child’s overall health.

Too much sugar can lead to early dental problems and increase the chances of unhealthy weight gain.

It can also affect energy levels. Foods high in sugar often give a quick boost of energy. It can sound like a good thing, but the disadvantage is that it drops with the same speed which makes children feel tired and cranky.

A simple diet that does not contain much sugar helps maintain a steady energy thus helping children to stay active at the same pace throughout.

Hidden Sugar in Everyday Foods

So when we say sugar, it does not mean only refined sugar. Sugar is hidden in many other foods that the children eat daily.

When we say no sugar, parents usually stop the intake of sweets and chocolates. But we don’t realise that the biscuits, juices, and flavoured yogurt all have hidden sugar. In fact, some baby foods also contain sugar.

Because of this, children tend to consume more sugar than parents expect. It is always better to look for labels and ingredients whenever you plan to give something to children.

Is It Possible to Avoid Sugar Completely?

It may not always be easy to avoid sugar completely. Celebrations and family gatherings often include sweets.

The idea is not to completely ban sugar forever. It is just to delay its regular use. Once children grow older, small amounts of sugar can be introduced in a balanced way.

Richa Chadha’s approach is not about imposing strict rules on children, but about making mindful choices at an early stage. Small steps like delaying sugar can help build better habits in children that will stay with them forever.
