When the Marking Desk Goes Wrong: How 12,000+ Students Got Wrong Scores in Rajasthan
Published: 24/10/25
Exams decide the future of many students. They study day and night to do well, hoping that their marks will open doors to good colleges and careers. But what happens when the system that checks those exams makes mistakes? Yes, it happened in Rajasthan this year and it has shocked many families.
What happened
In Rajasthan, the Board of Secondary Education (RBSE) found that the marks of more than 12,000 students in Class 10 and Class 12 were wrong. The mistakes were caused by carelessness during the copy-checking process.
This problem came to light when many students applied for re-evaluation. Students realised that their marks were lower than they deserved. When the board rechecked those papers, it found that several answers were left unchecked or marks were entered wrongly.
Imagine working hard all year, only to see low marks because someone forgot to add your points or skipped your answers.

It Was Not A Small Mistake
In Class 10, more than 10 lakh students appeared for exams. Around 26,000 students asked for re-evaluation. Out of them, marks of 7,400 students changed after rechecking.
In Class 12 (Science stream), about 2.7 lakh students appeared. Around 11,000 students applied for re-evaluation, and almost 3,000 got new marks.
In total, 12,035 students got the wrong scores because of mistakes during the marking process.
How did this happen?
The board found that some teachers did not properly check all answers. Some missed pages, while others didn’t add marks correctly. In a few cases, the marks written on the answer sheet were not entered properly into the computer system.
Under pressure and tight deadlines, many evaluators rush the process. This time, that rush led to huge errors.
Officials have said that over 500 teachers were careless or negligent while checking the answer sheets.
What Next?
After the issue was reported, the Rajasthan Board (RBSE) started an internal investigation. The board said strict action would be taken against teachers and officials responsible for the mistakes.
What Can We Learn From This?
This incident is a big lesson for everyone.
Students should not lose hope. If you feel your marks are unfair, apply for re-evaluation. You have the right to ask questions.
Teachers should be trained properly and given enough time to check answer sheets. Accuracy should matter more than speed. Results should always go through a final verification before being announced.
Parents should inform students to check exam papers thoroughly. Even small corrections should not be ignored.
The Story We Didn’t See
Behind every number is a real story. A student who scored less than expected might have cried all night. Another who failed wrongly may have missed a chance to join college. Parents who saved money for years for their child’s education suddenly found themselves helpless.
These stories show that a small mistake at the marking desk can destroy months of effort. For many students, this mistake cost confidence and peace of mind.
