Birthday Bumps Gone Wrong: Class 7 Student Injured in Mumbai School
Medical

Birthday bumps are nothing new. They have become a tradition at every birthday party. But sometimes, this fun can get dangerous.

A Class 7 boy from Vibgyor Roots & Rise in Malad was celebrating his birthday when his classmates gave him the usual birthday bumps. Unfortunately, it ended in a serious injury. Doctors later confirmed that he had suffered damage to his spine.

When Fun Turned Into Fear

Doctor Q&As from Parents like you

As they were celebrating, a group of students lifted him and bumped him harder than expected. Soon they realised the birthday boy was in pain. He was not enjoying it any more. They took him to the hospital, where the doctor mentioned the spine injury.

His family says the incident could have been prevented if the school had been more careful.

The parents have now filed a complaint with the police. They believe the school was negligent and did not act quickly enough after the accident.

Why Birthday Bumps Are Risky

As they can be done as harmless fun, even a small mistake while lifting or dropping a child can hurt the spine or back. In severe cases, it can also cause head and internal injuries if the child falls.

A Wake-Up Call for Schools

This incident has raised a big question. How safe are our schools when it comes to celebrations?

Teachers and staff need to step in before things get out of hand. A few regulations can help.

  1. Rough birthday games should not be allowed.
  2. Class celebrations should be supervised.
  3. Children should be taught that consent matters.

What Parents Can Do

Along with school, parents also play a role in making sure their children are safe within and outside the home.

  • Many children hesitate. Teach them to say NO wherever they are not comfortable.
  • Fun has to be enjoyed by everyone in the room.
  • Let them avoid any risky games in the name of fun.
  • Have a session with the school authorities to understand how birthdays are celebrated in school.

The recovery will be slow for the young boy. Meanwhile, his family hopes that schools across the country will take this as a warning.
