Safety at School

A shocking incident has come to light from Vasai, Maharashtra. A young girl from class 6 lost her life after being forced to do 100 sit-ups as punishment for coming late to school. What makes this case even more tragic is that the teacher knew she had pre-existing health issues, yet went ahead with the punishment.

This incident has sparked a conversation about the safety and discipline practices in schools. Parents, teachers, and child rights activists are asking important questions: How far is too far when punishing a child? What responsibilities do teachers and schools have to protect children?

What Happened That Day

The girl, studying at Shree Hanumant Vidya Mandir in the Sativali area of Vasai, had arrived late to school one morning. The school had a strict rule about punctuality. As a punishment, the teacher made her perform 100 sit-ups, and she had to do this while carrying her school bag on her back.

While sit-ups may seem like a normal exercise for adults, forcing a young child to do so many, especially with added weight, is extremely dangerous. Children’s bodies are still growing, and excessive physical strain can put severe pressure on their muscles and other internal organs.

After some time, the girl began complaining of pain in her back and neck. Her parents noticed her discomfort and rushed her to a local hospital. However, her condition worsened, and she was referred to JJ Hospital in Mumbai for better treatment. Despite the doctors’ efforts, the young girl tragically passed away.

Health Issues Made It Worse

According to reports, the girl had asthma, a condition that affects breathing. Children with asthma are more vulnerable to physical stress. Carrying a heavy school bag while doing sit-ups added extra pressure on her body, possibly leading to complications like internal bleeding or fluid in the lungs.

Medical examinations indicated pulmonary oedema (fluid in the lungs) and splenomegaly (enlarged spleen), which may have contributed to her death.

Experts have said that the number of sit-ups, combined with her pre-existing health condition, was far beyond what her body could handle safely.

The teacher, Mamta Yadav, was arrested and booked under culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Initially, an FIR (First Information Report) was not registered promptly, leading lawyers to request faster action from the Bombay High Court.

Activists have raised concerns about the school’s legality, claiming that the building did not have proper approvals and that municipal warning signs were hidden.

The Vasai Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) has issued a notice regarding the school’s building compliance.

Discipline should never come at the cost of a child’s life.

Parents send their children to school expecting safety and care. Schools and teachers must ensure that every student is protected. This incident should lead to stricter rules against harmful punishments and better training for teachers.

No child should ever lose their life because of a punishment.
