Story behind it

What started as a metro journey turned into a nightmare for a family when their four-year-old nearly lost his fingers on the escalator.

The incident, which took place at Delhi’s Mandi House Metro Station, highlights the importance of being extra vigilant when travelling with small children because they can’t sense danger the way we do.

The child and his aunt were descending from the concourse level to the Violet Line platform on the escalator when it happened. The little one sat down and his fingers got trapped in the small gap between the stairs and the side wall. This led to chaos and panic.

CISF and Delhi Police Personnel, who were present at the station at that time, rushed to help. They stopped the escalator in time, and the child was rushed to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. Fortunately, the child did not lose his fingers.

While escalators have made our lives easier, we can overlook the fact that they can be risky if proper precautions are not taken. This is especially true for small children.

If you are using an escalator with your little one, be it in a metro station, mall, or anywhere else, make sure you keep these things in mind:

Doctor Q&As from Parents like you

  • Never let your child sit on the escalator step, as this can bring their hands, feet, and loose clothes close to the side gaps.

  • Never let your child use the escalator alone. Always accompany them and hold their hand.

  • Never let your child lean against the side rail of an escalator. Always encourage them to stand in the centre.

  • Always ask your child to stay focused on the exit point of the escalator so that they are able to step off without tripping.

  • Check where the Emergency Stop Button is located so that you can reach it instantly if someone is in trouble.

Watch your little ones closely as their safety is in your hands.
