Story behind it

Some stories stay with you forever, not only because they touch your heart but also because they touch your soul. This incident is one of them.

On 6th September, 2021, a lone lifeboat was spotted by a passing ship in the Caribbean Sea. The coast guard vessel AB Carecare reached the boat the next day, only to find something that was both heartbreaking and miraculous.

Rescuers found 2 young children, Jose David (6) and Maria Beatriz Camblor Chacón (2) clinging to the lifeless body of their mother. It was her sacrifice that kept them alive.

This is the story of 40-year-old Mariely Chacón of Venezuela, who was aboard the Thor on September 3, 2021 with her 6-year-old son, 2-year-old daughter, husband Remis David Camblor and nanny, 25-year-old Verónica Martinez, for a cruise from Higuerote to Tortuga Island.

What was meant to be fun ended in a tragedy when the boat was struck by a wave that broke its hull apart. Remis went missing along with the other passengers while Mariely and her two children got into the lifeboat.

They were stuck in open water, with no sign of land for 4 days, without any food or water and no one to help them.

Mariely noticed that her children were getting dehydrated and needed to be fed. Desperate to save her children, she started breastfeeding them, without thinking about her own well-being. To make sure that she was producing enough milk for them she did something unimaginable. She started drinking her own urine.

The spokesperson from Venezuela’s National Maritime Authority INEA shared, “The mother who died kept her children alive by breastfeeding them and drinking her own urine. She died three or four hours before the rescue from dehydration after drinking no water for three days.”

For 4 days, she kept her children alive but couldn’t make it herself. Dehydration led to electrolyte depletion which eventually resulted in organ failure. The process was sped up by breastfeeding.
