Screen Addiction

“Why is my child already wearing glasses at this young age?” The common thought most parents are going through these days. Walk into any school today and you’ll notice most children wearing specs. This wasn’t the case a few years ago. Then what is going on?

Childhood myopia or near-sightedness is rising around the world and India is not behind. But why is this happening, and what can parents do?

What is Childhood Myopia?

Doctor Q&As from Parents like you

Myopia means difficulty seeing things far away. In this case, the nearby objects are clearly visible. So this means they can read a book but might struggle to see the blackboard at school.

It is becoming one of the most common eye conditions in children today. It usually begins in school-going children and if not treated, can worsen.

Why Are More Children Needing Glasses?

It is a mix of lifestyle, habits, and even genetics in some cases.

More screen time
The most common problem with today’s children. They spend hours on phones and tablets. Watching the screen at such a small distance strains the eyes.

Less outdoor play
Research shows that sunlight helps protect eyes. But nowadays, many children spend more time indoors than outside. So the sunlight intake reduces leading vitamin deficiency.

Genetics
If parents have myopia, the child is more likely to develop it too.

Early learning pressure
These are rare cases. The modern parents don’t really do that. But in a few cases, children are expected to study and read for long hours. Constant close-up work may add to eye strain.

Signs Parents Should Watch For

If you notice any of these signs, it’s time for an eye checkup.

  1. Squinting while looking at the board or TV
  2. Complaining of headaches or eye strain
  3. Sitting too close to the television
  4. Difficulty seeing things at a distance
  5. Rubbing eyes frequently

Can Myopia Be Prevented?

While we can’t change genetics, we can change habits.

  • Let them play outside at least 1–2 hours a day.
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule. After about 20 minutes on a screen, get your child to look at something far away, roughly 20 feet, for around 20 seconds. It gives their eyes a quick break.
  • Limit unnecessary screen time, especially at night.
  • Keep good lighting while reading or studying.

Why Do Regular Eye Check-Ups

Many children don’t realize their vision is poor. They think it’s the same for everyone. That’s why doctors recommend regular eye check-ups even if there are. No signs. If myopia is detected early, children can get the right glasses or get the right treatment on time.

Globally, doctors warn that by 2050, nearly half the world’s population could be myopic. That’s a huge number.

Well, it is not that alarming if you take the right precautions. In this case, it is regular eye checkups and a few screening limitations.
