Frequently asked Questions (FAQ's)

An ovulation calculator is a tool that estimates when you may ovulate and identifies the days when you are most likely to conceive. It uses information such as the first day of your last period and your average menstrual cycle length to estimate your fertile window.
An ovulation calculator estimates your ovulation date based on your menstrual cycle. Ovulation generally occurs about 14 days before your next period, although the timing can vary from person to person and from cycle to cycle. The calculator then estimates your fertile window around this time.
To estimate your ovulation date, enter the first day of your last period and your usual cycle length into the calculator. As a general guide, ovulation may occur around 14 days before your next period. For example, with a regular 28-day cycle, ovulation may occur around day 14.
Your fertile window is the few days leading up to ovulation and the day around ovulation. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for several days, while an egg remains viable for about 12 to 24 hours after ovulation. This means pregnancy is possible from sex in the days before ovulation as well as shortly after it.
If you are trying to conceive, having sex every day or every other day during the fertile window can help maximise your chances. You do not need to identify one exact hour or day. Timing sex across the fertile window can be a more practical approach.
You can use an ovulation calculator as a starting point, but its estimate may be less reliable when your cycles are irregular. If your periods are frequently unpredictable or you are unsure whether you are ovulating, speak with a gynaecologist. Irregular cycles can sometimes indicate that ovulation is not happening regularly.
Some people notice changes around ovulation, such as clear, slippery and stretchy cervical mucus, a slight rise in basal body temperature, mild pelvic discomfort or increased breast tenderness. Cervical mucus changes can be particularly useful for identifying the fertile period.
An ovulation calculator can provide a useful estimate when your menstrual cycles are reasonably regular, but it cannot predict ovulation with complete accuracy. Apps and calendar-based fertility tools have limitations, particularly when cycle length varies.
A calendar-based ovulation calculator should not be treated as a guaranteed method of contraception. Fertile days can vary between cycles, and predicting ovulation based only on dates can be inaccurate. If you want to prevent pregnancy, speak with a healthcare professional about reliable contraceptive options.
Consider speaking with a gynaecologist or fertility specialist if you have been trying to conceive for 12 months without pregnancy if you are under 35, or for 6 months if you are 35 or older. You may want to seek help sooner if your periods are very irregular, you know of a fertility-related condition, or you have other concerns about your reproductive health.
