The Silent Freedom We Don’t Give Our Kids — And Why It Matters
Lifeskills

Patriotic movies are back on TV. Kids are full of questions about what happened back then and why. Here’s our 79th Independence Day! The major topics talked about during this time are freedom and liberty.

Parents explain to children how we got freedom and what it means to be free from control. But somehow they don’t realise, there’s one kind of freedom that often goes unnoticed. And sometimes, we unintentionally take it away.

No, we are not talking about their freedom to travel or choose a career. It’s the freedom to be themselves.

Doctor Q&As from Parents like you

The Freedom to Make Choices

As parents, we want the best for our kids. We want to guide them and protect them. We even decide for them until a certain age. But in doing so, we can overlook their need to make choices.

What to wear?
What hobby to pursue?
Whether to play cricket or draw in the afternoon?

These tiny decisions shape confidence. They teach kids to trust their instincts. Without this freedom, they grow up doubting themselves. They will always keep looking for approval before making a move.

The Freedom to Fail

We celebrate India’s independence because our freedom fighters were willing to fail. And this fail was a big fail aiming towards a greater goal. Many children today grow up fearing failure because hold them at every fall.

When we rush to fix every mistake, kids don’t learn resilience. Handle failure with love and support. It teaches them that they can get up and try again. And this is a lesson far more valuable than perfect scores.

The Freedom to Speak

Our freedom fighters raised their voices against injustice. They asked difficult questions. But in many homes, children still don’t feel comfortable speaking up. They supress their queries even in school assuming they might sound funny or irrelevant.

Allow them to ask as many questions as they want. Let it be nowhere related to what you or they are doing. All we want is that they express their thoughts without fear of being shut down or judged.

Why Should Parents Give Freedom To Children

Children are growing in a world where social media tells them who they should be and peer pressure adds to it.

If they don’t get their freedom at home, they will start looking for that space elsewhere. And this can sometimes be unsafe for them.

So this Independence Day, the bravest thing you can do as a parent is set your children free…and this should happen while you are still there to guide them.
