Sometimes, teenagers teach us the most important lessons of our lives. Something similar happened for R. Madhavan. In a recent interview on YouTube, he spoke about his Canadian days. He had moved to Canada for studies when he was living in a town that was very wild for those times. There were drugs, teenage pregnancies, and lots of challenges he had never seen back in India.
Even though it was a difficult environment, Madhavan found guidance from the family he stayed with. Their approach helped him stay strong on his ethics and the same later influenced how he raised his son, Vedaant.
A Teenage Boy Surviving In A Foreign Culture
Moving to Canada as a teenager was eye-opening for Madhavan. He saw things he had never encountered before. Parties, drugs, and teenagers facing adult problems too soon was a common thing. It was confusing and scary at first.
But he did not get diverted as the family he stayed with maintained discipline and structure. Their kids were focused and stayed away from trouble. Madhavan noticed this and wanted to know their secret.
So he thought of checking with the lady of the house. She gave Madhavan one piece of advice he would never forget, “Don’t give your child free time.”
She explained that children should always have their time filled with meaningful activities, something they are passionate about. Too much free time could lead them to distractions or trouble.

How He Applied The Lesson To Vedaant
When Madhavan became a father, he remembered that advice. He wanted to give Vedaant the guidance and structure he had learned from the Canadian family.
He made sure Vedaant’s days were filled with activities that encouraged discipline and focus.
One area where this approach bore fruit was in swimming. Vedaant developed a keen interest in swimming from a young age. With consistent practice and dedication, he has already represented India in international competitions like the Commonwealth Youth Games, Malaysian Open, and Thailand Open.
Madhavan’s story shows how the correct guidance moulds children in the right direction even in the midst of a wrong environment.
It’s a lesson that works for our new generation of children. Their world is full of social media and gadgets, which is the root cause of distraction in young children. Keeping them involved in meaningful activities is something that will help keep them away from bad distractions.
The Proud Father
Madhavan is proud of the person Vedaant is becoming. The discipline and achievements of Vedaant clearly reflect the values Madhavan has taught him.
Madhavan believes that just protecting your children from the world will not help, you should also prepare them to face it with confidence. The lessons he learned during his teenage years in Canada helped him do just that.
