Behaviour

Parenting is full of unpredictable moments, the kind that make you rethink everything you thought you knew about raising children. Bollywood star Kajol Devgn recently shared one such moment that transformed a scolding session into one of the most eye-opening lessons she’s ever learned and it came not from a parenting expert, but from her own son, Yug.

A Simple Family Moment With a Powerful Lesson

During a conversation on What Women Want, Kajol recalled a seemingly ordinary family scene. The family was sitting through a Mata Ki Chowki ritual at home when her daughter Nysa chose to stay at the table instead of joining everyone. Kajol, expecting obedience, asked her to join the gathering. On which Nysa said, ‘Mumma, I really don’t want to.’ And Kajol got irritated and shouted at her.

But what happened next changed everything.

After the discussion, little Yug walked over, sat quietly in Kajol’s lap, and said something unexpected:

“You know, Mom, you shouldn’t scold her for telling the truth.”

It hit Kajol like “ulte haath ka thappad” - a metaphor she used jokingly to describe being taught a lesson by her own child.

When Children Teach Us More Than We Teach Them

It’s easy for parents to fall into autopilot of instructing, correcting, and sometimes reacting before truly listening. But Yug’s calm, honest observation reminded Kajol that children often communicate needs or discomfort honestly, not disrespectfully.

Psychologists emphasize that children aren’t always being difficult; sometimes they’re simply expressing what they truly feel. And when parents misread that, conflicts take root unnecessarily. Instead of assuming disobedience, asking why a child feels a certain way can reveal deeper emotional honesty.

Why This Matters in Modern Parenting

Kajol’s story resonates because it’s so relatable. Every parent has had that Oops moment where we react faster than reason. But when Yug defended his sister, he highlighted that validation goes a long way.

After all, disciplining children doesn’t mean flattening their voice. It means teaching them boundaries while also teaching them confidence in expressing how they feel. Experts suggest that when parents acknowledge a child’s honest feelings - even if they contradict expectations,  trust and emotional connection grow stronger.

The Bigger Lesson

Parenting isn’t a one-way street. Sometimes, children become the teachers. They remind parents how to listen and respect the truth even when it’s inconvenient. Little

And perhaps that’s the true beauty of being a parent is learning from the very souls you’re trying to guide.
