Screen Time
Screen Addiction

You just need 5 minutes to write that email or to finish preparing dinner, but your little one is cranky and asking for your attention. You can’t think of anything else, so you decide to hand them your phone.

“It’s just 5 minutes”, you think, “it would hardly do any harm”. You look for something age-appropriate and come across AI videos for children, with bright colours and upbeat music. Some are informational as well, with their favorite cartoon characters singing ABC or 123.

Such videos seem perfect to keep your little one occupied, don’t they?

More than 200 child advocacy groups and experts don’t think so. In fact, they have urged Google CEO Sundar Pichai and YouTube CEO Neal Mohan to remove or ban such AI-generated videos from YouTube’s Children Platform in a letter.

They believe such videos could prove to be quite harmful for a child’s developing brain, as their quality is poor and they have been specifically curated to grab the audience's attention. Channels often create and upload these videos in bulk to increase revenue generation, and due to this, such videos lack meaningful or educational value.

Experts have also pointed out that such meaningless content is easily accessible to children and even available on platforms meant for younger audiences.

Why Should You Be Concerned As A Parent?

Experts have argued that AI videos can drastically impact the development of children by confusing them and changing how they perceive the world around them. Such content is developed with the aim of keeping the children engaged rather than making them learn something new, and hence is often unrealistic.

Rachel Franz from Fairplay shared that AI-generated videos add to the existing problems YouTube already faces when it comes to children’s content.

She also emphasized how important it is to address AI slop and call out YouTube for how it is allowing such content on its platform.

Fairplay is a non-profit organization committed to helping children thrive in an increasingly commercialized, screen-obsessed culture.’

YouTube’s Response

In their response, YouTube’s spokesperson has stated that the platform adheres to high standards when it comes to choosing content for YouTube Kids, and it also imposes limitations on AI-generated videos on some channels. He further shared that YouTube is working in the direction of labeling AI content with more accuracy.
